What on Earth is Movement?
Blending of Disciplines
Movement is a blending of disciplines like gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, dance and parkour, to name a few. Not too long ago the approach to each of these fields would be to specialize in one of them at a time. However, it has become apparent that each of these disciplines has something unique to offer.
Beyond Cross-training to Cross Disciplines
The dancer can become a better mover by incorporating some gymnastics strength protocols. While the fighter could improve performance by utilizing rhythmicality from dance.
Therefore, the idea of training has been re-informed. Rather than focusing on just one element, like flexibility or cardio, we have found that more can be accomplished by exposing our students to multiple disciplines, at once. In this manner we can open more doors to potential results. Within one session you might work on coordination, strength, mobility and tactical work through exercises, drills and games focused on developing physicality far beyond what most can imagine.
Most people have a routine that they have become accustomed to. The runner loves to run but how many runners are doing real supplemental work to prepare the body for running. With each stride the body needs to absorb 4 times of body weight ground forces, placed on the joints and spine. Over time this impact can wreak havoc on the feet, ankles and hips. Similar is true of the cyclist, yogi or weightlifter, each discipline has it’s benefits and it also has pieces that are missing. Within the Movement practice we offer tools to support the missing pieces, in a holistic way, to either prepare the mover for their sport or just develop a more capable mover.
Obsessed Practitioners
What’s most impressive about our approach is that not one trainer at Willspace is an expert within any physical discipline but rather most are average fitness enthusiasts that are obsessed with movement. All have started from ground zero and developed themselves within the practice during their tutelage at Willspace. Before introducing our students into any piece of our work our trainers have practiced each element extensively in order to provide the best instruction.
Sharing this, is only to say that most people see what we do and think, “I could never do that.” But never is a long time and the reality is that, when proper instruction meets desire to improve, nothing is impossible. So don’t be intimidated by the fancy moves. Instead we hope you are inspired by the possibilities.
